Celebrating Napoleon Dynamite

Napoleon Dynamite is celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year! It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 17, 2004, and officially started playing in movie theaters later that year on August 27. My personal experience with “Nappy D” started 21 years ago, on April 24, 2003. The same day that I graduated from Brigham Young University (BYU).

After receiving my Bachelor of Arts diploma, I was standing outside the Harris Fine Arts Center (HFAC) with my wife and another graduate, Cory Lorenzen. All three of us were still in our caps and gowns and waiting for our families to when Cory said, “Hey, I’m working on a film this summer. Wanna work with me?” The film he was talking about, is now the cult classic, Napoleon Dynamite! I mean, I know that graduating from college is a big deal. But I never imagined that my graduation day would have this big of an impact on my life!

Curt R. Jensen was part of the Art Department for Napoleon Dynamite.

Above is a picture of the Napoleon Dynamite Art Department on the front steps of Pedro’s house. From the left is Cory Lorenzen (Production Designer), Jonas Sappington (Art Assistant), Jenni Nelson (Property Master), and me (Art Director).

Together we were responsible for all of the locations, set dressing, and props for the film. The script called for a carton of 1% milk . . . but at the time, Gossner Foods (who donated the milk for the film) didn’t make 1% cartons. That didn’t stop Cory! He created his own 1% printable milk carton so Napoleon could deliver his now classic line to Deb. “I see you’re drinking 1%. Is that ’cuz you think you’re fat? ‘Cuz you’re not. You could be drinking Whole if you wanted to.”

To celebrate Napoleon Dynamite’s 20th Anniversary, I created my own printable 1% milk carton! You can use them as party favor boxes for your next family movie night or Napoleon Dynamite themed party!

The printable carton even contains a list of nutritional facts on the side . . . but instead of nutrition facts, it’s a list of Napoleon’s skills. Because, as Napoleon likes to point out, “Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills!”

You’ll receive a zipped folder with the following files:

INSTRUCTIONS PDF - with step-by-step illustrated instructions & supply list

1% MILK CARTON PDF - for cutting by hand

2 PRINT-THEN-CUT PNG FILES - for cutting with Cricut or Silhouette machines
